FAQs

FAQs.  Which is the best Professional Fire Fighter Program for you?  The Professional Fire Fighter Program - Flex or the Professional Fire Fighter Program - Enhanced?

1. What are the target audiences for each program?

Either program offers an effective education method for any person interested in a fire fighting career. Both programs offer the basic prerequisites required by most potential employers. The full-time Enhanced program, where all aspects of education and training are directly facilitated and led by experienced instructors, better meets the needs of those who thrive in a classroom environment and learn well not just from their instructors but also benefit from interactions with classmates. The part-time blended learning Flex program is designed to accommodate those whose current careers, family lives, and financial responsibilities will benefit from them being able to follow a flexible learning schedule, with less full-time scheduled study. We encourage interested candidates to discuss both options with our staff to assist in selecting the program which best meets your needs.

2. Why does the Enhanced program cost more?

The Flex program is an accredited program which meets all of the expectations of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level I and II standard, known as the Professional Firefighter Standard. This is the core pre-requisite for most career fire departments in Canada. Flex also includes NFPA 472: Awareness and Operations Level for Responders to Hazardous Materials.

The Enhanced program is more extensive. It meets all of the competencies covered in the Flex program, but also includes additional certifications:

  • NFPA 1001: Level I & II Professional Fire Fighter
  • NFPA 472: Awareness and Operations Level for Responders to Hazardous Materials
  • NFPA 1002:  Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator
  • NFPA 1051: Wildland Firefighter
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS)
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS):  Access
  • NFPA 1006 Rope Rescue Awareness
  • Firefighter Self Rescue
  • Aquatic Spinal Rescue

The additional certifications in the Enhanced program are not prerequisites for most Canadian career fire departments, but they definitely provide competitive advantages during hiring processes, as well as setting the table for career advancement after hiring.

Both the Flex program and the Enhanced program are designated as eligible for student funding.

3. What are the advantages of the full-time Professional Fire Fighter Program - Enhanced?

The Enhanced program offers more certifications, providing candidates with a more robust resume and a broader field of potential employers. The program is also led and facilitated in its entirety by experienced ESA instructors. Students typically feel they benefit by learning not only from instructors, but also from other students. Full-time programs develop a camaraderie and team-based feel similar to an emergency services career.

4. What are the advantages of the part-time Professional Fire Fighter Program - Flex?

The Flex program allows those with family, professional, or other commitments to study with a flexible and largely self-driven schedule that allows them to maintain life-academic balance. The certification gained is the core certification required as a prerequisite by most career Canadian fire departments.

5. Which program is better at helping graduates get jobs?

Both programs provide the core prerequisite required by the majority of career Canadian fire departments.

The full-time Enhanced program has been offered by ESA for more than a decade, and has an exceptional job placement rate for graduates. The part-time Flex program is a new offering which has been developed with the onset of new delivery technologies and platforms.

It is predictable that both programs will be successful in getting our graduates good fire service jobs. Fire departments seek well rounded individuals, and fire education and training is just one component of the hiring assessment. For example, a graduate of the Flex program who has significant work and life experience, and chose the part-time study option to allow successful life-academic balance, would be a strong candidate for hiring.

6. Where can I get advice outside of ESA about what type of program to take?

Ask lots of questions! Talk to current firefighters, fire chiefs, and human resource professionals responsible for hiring processes. Their advice is very useful in making an informed decision.

Program Goals

  • Graduates of the ESA Professional Fire Fighter program will be competent as per all competencies of applicable National Fire Protection Association standards (including NFPA 1001 Level I and II and NFPA 1072-Operations) and the accreditation requirements of the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and ProBoard.
  • Staff, faculty, partners, and students of ESA will be provided with a safe and respectful working and learning environment.
  • Learning at ESA will be supported through provision of access for students to experienced, qualified faculty, and the support and guidance of professional administrative staff.
  • Achievement of proficiency will be supported through access to high quality learning materials and equipment, effective instructor to student ratios, and appropriate practical training sites.

It gave me the skills I needed to know in the fire hall. I felt comfortable with my enviroment.

Shaneet
Fire 1009

ESA provided me with an environment fully immersed in the Emergency Services culture and lifestyle. My favourite component was that skills and knowledge are taught by active Firefighters and Paramedics from local jurisdictions. Truly an amazing experience and a great institution

Samm
Fire 1908E+

The live demonstration, practical and lab days were easily my favorite part of the program. It was always the most satisfying to implement classroom/textbook knowledge into a real event or scenario and learn how to implement that knowledge properly. I feel that it's very easy to see the fruits of your labor in the medical field and that you get out of it what you put into it. I know I learned a great deal in my time within the EMR program and I couldn't be happier for it.

Angus
EMR 1906

I really enjoyed the diversity of instructors, a multitude of different backgrounds and experience made learning enjoyable and engaging. Seriously, awesome program :)

Laura
PCP 1808

Excellent instructors and facilities, and extremely professional. Loved the course and was very well prepared for the ACP Exam.

Andrea
EMR 1107

One of the main reasons I chose ESA besides its CMA accreditation was that its instructors are still practicing EMT's and Paramedics. They are informative, approachable, and I really appreciated the small class sizes. We are more than just a face in the crowd. Being on first name basis and having instructors know you is the only way to learn.

Lucas
EMT 1401

They provide thorough knowledge and information that is valuable to anyone trying to get into the emergency services...the instructors are in the profession.

Jordan
Fire 1109

ESA could not have put together a better, diverse team of instructors. All students absorb the curriculum in a different fashion and the diversity of your team ensures these needs are met. Well done!!! They're all people the students look up to, and I can guarantee every one of us, at some point in our career, would love the opportunity to work alongside any member of your team.

The dream has come true and I have made the Calgary Fire Department. We find out our start dates at the end of August. I would like to thank everyone at ESA for helping me prepare for this amazing career!

Andrew

I have been fire fighting in Saint John New Brunswick for 6 years now, and wanted to let you know that your mock hiring process is what prepared me for my actual job interview with SJFD...I felt very prepared to start my career after leaving ESA...the chief that did Rope Rescue helped me strive to be on our Technical Rescue Team on the trucks. Thanks again!

Adam
Fire 0808

Outstanding program. Instructors were extremely knowledgeable and helpful, physical training sessions were great, the mock candidate competition process was very beneficial, and the administrative staff was very caring. Overall this was a phenomenal program.

Josh
Fire 1308

The instructors are great. They're fun, share lots of real life experience, and give the class a relaxed atmosphere. The "real" scenarios and MCIs were an amazing shift in perspective from the stiff word for word surveys we practiced, to learning to apply it effectively in stressful and dynamic situations.

Michael
EMR l503B

The instructors! Really approachable, very willing to help out on anything.

Janelle
EMR 1906

The only thing that ESA can do for the fire candidate is stress the importance of being prepared. It's the student's job to study for the aptitude test and be fit enough for the physical

Corey
Fire 1308

I attended ESA for the EMR and the EMT program. I was just recently hired with Alberta Health Services in Edmonton. ESA helped the entire way through schooling, provincial examinations, practicum (which I was very well prepared for) and finally getting a job. if you are looking to get into Emergency Services as a career, ESA is an excellent school with excellent instructors

Josh
EMT 1304

I would recommend ESA for fire fighter training because I was trained by real fire fighters not just people who could read out of a text book

Adam
Fire 0809

On July 2, 2019 I officially started my career as a (probationary) firefighter with the Grande Prairie Fire Department. I succeeded in all the steps; exams, physical fitness test, phobia exams, swim test, interview and station assessment. I made the one spot they were offering out of the 50 plus applicants that started with the aptitude exam. The hard work, determination, and dedication to such an honourable and respected career has finally paid off and it wouldn't have been possible without the help from yourself (Ian Clavelle), ESA and the ESA staff.

It was a very well organized course taught by people who can directly relate to the material. I found it provided me with a good opportunity to practice the more hands-on situations and it gave me some skills I will definitely use in the future.

Really good instruction! Wouldn't change anything about having different teachers everyday. It's nice to fill the toolbox with input from everyone!

The course all throughout the program was awesome. Three months ago, I didn't know anyone in the class and now with all the team efforts, we are all really close, good friends.

If you’re considering a career in Emergency Services, your first place to look should be ESA. Even just a conversation with one of the incredible administration staff will give you the understanding of what is expected and how to succeed. I am extremely fortunate to have been a part of the Fire Program, EMR, and EMT. Moving into a career that I have dreamt about since I was a young kid I could not feel more prepared to serve my community, thank you ESA!

ESA students are typically the strongest EMT students we see in the field compared to other schools. Keep up the great work." Comment from one of the Ambulance Preceptors regarding ESA EMT/PCP students in 2014

Coworkers who work in the emergency services told me that ESA was "the king of all EMR schools". And, that ESA prepares its students the best for their ACP exams.

I have 3 weeks left in my Toronto Fire recruit class and I am very thankful I attended ESA. The standard that ESA teaches to was very high. I have felt that my knowledge from ESA has put me ahead throughout my recruit class. I also appreciate how ESA teaches many of the new techniques in fire fighting e.g. decon and ventilation. Toronto Fire has not adopted many of these new principles and I feel like I am ahead of the curve. I also found after talking to many of the other students in my recruit class that I had much more hands on and in depth classes on most topics. Especially the live fire training, auto ex, decon, fire dynamics, self rescue. I would like to say Thank you to all the ESA staff and instructors

Applied to many processes (Edmonton, Strathcona, Medicine Hat) and worked many small jobs while I waited for responses (teaching first aid/CPR, oilfield medical/Fire for Scott Safety, worked as EMT-A with AHS IFT). I was and still am very pleased with my experience at ESA. I'm proud to say I came from ESA...All programs are very professional well put together and a lot of pride is taken into the teaching.

As I am applying for Paramedic scool, I am finding that I am very prepared, especially looking through my old EMT school work. I felt prepared for my EMT career when I left ESA, but I am only now beginning to realize how in depth the EMT course was and it's going to benefit me as I prepare to return to school.

To all of you from ESA who were instrumental in 0909, I want to say thank you. A couple weeks ago my chief handed me a red helmet, lieutenant badge, and radio. ESA 0909 was such a critical part of allowing me to have some success as a firefighter, and now as a fire officer. Thank you for your investment in providing solid and passionate training to the fire service. I, for one, appreciate it more than I can say, but I will say, thank you.
